Motorcycle Repair: tank rust, yamaha r6, rust

Question
Hi Chris!
I just bought my friends old 2002 Yamaha R6 and its been a blast riding it.
The other day I checked the insides of the tank and saw some rust developing on the sides near the tank opening.  I wanted to put some oil on it to remove the rust but I realized that it might get mixed with the fuel.  I dont want the rust to spread inside the tank.  How can I protect my tank from getting rust? And how can I stop the rust from spreading.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Eddie.
There's not much you can do to stop rust, but you can stave it off.  Just pull the tank and reseal it.  The kit is about 20 or 30 dollars, is quite simple to do and it will take the bike out of service for about 24 hours, but it will stop the rust from getting much worse.

Good luck.
