Motorcycle Repair: 1983 Honda VT750 shifter, honda vt750, honda shop

Question
Bike is stuck in 2nd gear. Repair shop sez the shift lever is bent. They tell me it takes 3 days of labor to repair. At least $1000. Local Honda shop recommends buying a salvage engine. Is this repair that difficult? Or expensive?

Answer
Hey T.
Yes.  Unfortunately, if they are talking about the shifter forks, then yes it is.  The reason, which they should have explained, is that they need to pull the motor and split the case to acess the parts that they need to replace.

Oftentimes, the easiest and cheapest thing to do is to get another motor and replace it.  If you can keep the old one, then do so, since it can always be pulled apart to use for spare parts.
And if they insist on keeping the old motor, then make sure that they cut you a break on the price, since spare parts is what they would want it for as well (from which they are looking at making a profit).

Good luck.
