Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Honda Ascot 500, honda ascot 500, charging system

I have a new battery in my 84 Honda Ascot 500 motorcycle.  It starts, and sounds good, but when I put it in gear and accelerate, it dies and the battery goes dead. Any ideas? thanks.

Hi Catherine,

With the limited information given, it's difficult to diagnose. Maybe start by checking charging system output and individual components. Verify that the charging system is operating properly. Check all electrical connections or corrosion and install dielectric grease in all connectors. Check all switch contacts and fuse terminals for corrosion. Get the idea? Go through the electrical system this way.

If the MC was stored and recently return to use, check the carburetor float bowls for evidence of varnishing.
