Motorcycle Repair: Z50 restoration, magneto ignition system, ebay auctions

Question
I was given a non-running 1969 Honda Z50.  It had been sitting for at least 10 years.  When I got it, it was missing the throttle, had cracked flat tires, and the brakes were not working.  Also, the wire harness looks a little dry and brittle. What would you suggest I start working on first in order to get it running?  My main objective is to at least get it to turnover and/or start.  I've never worked on a motorcycle before.  So far the only thing I've done is put in a new battery and throttle.  Any advice to get me on the right track would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Answer
Desi, you have to find out if it turns over, first. If the engine is seized, then it isn't worth a lot and will cost plenty to restore.
These bikes have a magneto ignition system, so the battery is just for the horn and lights. The magneto is on the left side of the motor under the cover. There contact points under the flywheel that can be cleaned and adjusted through the slots in the flywheel.
Use a new spark plug, laid on the cylinder head, connected to the plug wire and kick the engine over to see if you have spark. If the bike has a key, it has to be ON or disconnect the ignition switch altogether. Once you get spark you will need to clean the fuel system..  gas tank, petcock (fuel valve) and carburetor.
If the engine has good compression it should run after that. It is always a good idea to check the valve clearances to be sure that you have .002" when the piston is in the compression stroke.
If none of this makes sense to you, check out some books on basic motorycle maintenance at the library or on-line.
There are numerous websites devoted to Z50s and mini-trails like yours. Check Ebay auctions for leads to people who have parts and information.
