Motorcycle Repair: 79 Honda CM400A No Spark, stator coil, component specs

Question
Hi, I bought this bike from a friend who had parked it for 3 weeks, then it wouldn't start, no spark.   I have put a brand new ignition module on it and still have no spark, it only sends 1V to the coil.   The ignition module has 12V to it, the alternator feeds it ac at 7V as well.   We are starting to think the Ignition module isn't getting enough power or amps.   Any Ideas?
Thanks

Answer
Hi James.
To start with, you should be looking at the battery.  If it is bad (test with a hygrometer), then replace it.  Even if the stator was bad, the battery should produce enough power to start and run the bike long enough to test the stator.

Next check for shorts in the wiring harness.  You will need the repair manual for that as it has all of the wiring diagrams and component specs on the bike.

The stator coil should be providing between 13 - 15VDC at the battery terminals with the bike running.

Have you checked the possibility that the fuel was bad or that the carbs may need a proper cleaning?  That would prevent fuel from flowing properly into the cylinders and prevent the bike from firing as well due to lack of fuel.

If the bike has spent time in seasonal storage, then that is a very real probability.
You can test it by using the automotive start fluid that you can get at any auto parts store.  Spray some into the intake and start the bike.  If it fires up, then the problem is fuel related, not electrical.

However, untill all related systems are properly checked out, do not assume that it is only one problem.

Good luck.
