Motorcycle Repair: honda dream lights/ignition switch, honda dream, position switches

Question
Before I knew anything about the Honda Dreams, I picked this bike out of a field off of a friend of a friend simply for the way it looked. I've  been troubleshooting various problems for about 4 months now.  It's a c77, maybe 1964?
I've got it running pretty smoothly, but have some problems with the electrical system.  I can start and run the bike with the key in the 2nd position, but the headlight will only come on when the key is in the 3rd position. The bike kills when I turn the key from 2nd to 3rd position.  Have I got some wires crossed or a bad ignition switch? Do I have the key in the correct positions?

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
EJ Stump

Answer
EJ... there are 5 and 6 position switches, depending on where the bike was sold. IF it is a C77 and not a CA77, then it could have the 6 position switch or someone changed it to a 5 position and it isn't functioning properly.

HONDA designed the 5 position switch to do:

Engine crank only - key turned to left, after insertion

Key OFF

Ignition ON-with horn and brake light.

All lights ON - and power to ignition

Tail light ON - no ignition.

For the 6 position switch:

Engine crank only - key turned to left, after insertion

Key OFF

Ignition ON-with horn and brake light.

Running lights On - Headlight has small bulb at base of light assy, usually both bulbs are replaceable.

All lights ON - and power to ignition

Tail light ON - no ignition.

Send an email to me at www.vintagehonda.com and I will send a wiring diagram for the Dreams to you.
