Motorcycle Repair: Starting my bike after 1 and a half months idle, fuel treatment, charge battery

Question
Chris,

I had to put my Duc 748 away for a month an a half w/o doing anyting to it, you know like "winterization" I want to start it back now but would like to know if there is something I should do to the engine before cranking it up after this long.

Thank you,

Rodrigo

Answer
Hi Rodrigo.
 Here's the things that you need to do;

1)  Charge battery.

2)  Check tire pressures.

3)  Check fuel for water.

You need to watch out for the possibility of needing to clean the carbs.

If you dump a full container of fuel treatment (the kind that is made with/from jet fuel) into the tank prior to starting it up.  If there is only a small amount of build-up in the carbs, then that should get rid of it.  If it doesn't then the carbs will need to be pulled and cleaned.

If the bike doesn't idle like it used to, runs rough or not at all, then that is indicative of the carbs being dirty, but the fuel treatment should clear up any that built up over the relatively short period that the bike was stored.

Good luck.
