Motorcycle Repair: replace the trip reset knob, replacement knobs, dremel

o.k. don't ask how it happened but I broke the knob on the trip reset. I know you can get replacement knobs, but how the crap do you get the old knob off? there is about a 1/4" of the shaft still there. speedo is old style FLH 78-84.

Hi Charlie.
 What you need to do is to pull the speedo mechanism out of the casing.  Then, carefully, using a Dremel with a cutting wheel, shear off the remains of the old knob.  It should be plastic and will cut righ off the post.  Then put the new knob on.
