Motorcycle Repair: stator&rotor, stator rotor, rotor bike

Question
Hi Chris
How much trouble can I get into by removing engin cover on a 1985 Yamaha xv1000 to replace stator and rotor, bike is not charging. Ed

Answer
Hi Ed.
The stator is easily accessed, but you need to drain the oil first.

before you do that, have you made sure that the problem is the stator and not a bad battery?

If you are not sure how to tell, then put the bike up on the centerstand and start her up.  Check the voltage across the terminals.  It should be charging at 13 - 15 VDC.  If it is, then the problem is the battery.  If it is not, then replace the stator.

Good luck.
