Motorcycle Repair: Honda Shadow 1986 VT700, honda shadow 1986, plug caps

Question
Upon initial starting...engine runs rough, seems to be running on one cylinder until it warms up for a long period of time or until you ride it at higher RPM's.

We have taken it in the shop and have the carburators cleaned multiple times with little affect on performance.

Motorcycle has 15,000 miles...sat for approx. 7 years. A mechanic suggested a valve adjustment. However, the motorcycle manual specific for this motorcycle indicates self adjusting valves.

We have replaced the fuel filter, there doesn't appear to have any sediment in the gas tank/fuel.
The motorcycle starts easy with choke on, and idles by itself. However if you try to give it any gas... she wants to die out, until you let it warm up long enough.

Where do we go from here... any suggestions?

Answer
Roy, I don't have much info on this new of a bike. If the carbs have been FULLY disassembled and cleaned, then you have to look elsewhere....  I would check the spark plug caps for variances in resistance values, replace the spark plugs if you haven't, check all vacuum lines going into the carbs and whatever they are attached to. If the bike still has any emission control components check their function and connections to the rest of the intake system.
I will assume that the carb vacuum diaphragms are still okay. Sounds like the transition from idle to part throttle is the area of problems, so check the idle mixture screw settings, the idle jets for blockage.

I checked an online microfiche service and see that there appears to be an external air cut diaphragm assy, perhaps for one carb only. Check it for air leaks and function. I also see that the front and back carbs have different idle jet sizes, so be sure that they are in the right locations.
Perhaps, DYNOJET has a jet kit that will cure the problem, if all the OEM settings are correct.

You didn't mention if it had an aftermarket exhaust system.
If so, it is probable that you need to rejet the carbs.
