I recently replaced the clutch on my CBR600.  Everything seemed to go smooth during the install but I have been having problems with it lately.  The problem is only when the bike is off for a few hours.  After the bike sits over night and i start it back up for the first few minutes the clutch doesn't fully disengage.  For example I start the bike in neutral, pull the clutch in, shift to first and the bike lunges forward and stalls.  After this intial stall the clutch works fine...I'm planning to pull it apart tonight to trouble shoot, but I wanted to know if there is anything that I should be looking for in particular.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe,

Sounds as if the clutch and cable needs adjusted. I would make this adjustment before pulling apart the clutch assy. again.

Mark,

The clutch cable is adjusted so that with the cable leaver released there is very minimal play in the mechanism, and if the problem was that the pull of the clutch cable didn't full disengage the clutch the remedy would be to pretension the cable...is that recommended?  Also if the cable was out of adjustment why would the clutch perform fine once warmed up?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
I can only go by your description. I reply from experience with like and similar symptoms, which is a mere whim compared to being present and performing a quick inspection of the clutch system.

It may take a couple of minutes before the oil and clutch plates separate once the engine has started. This is not uncommon with new clutch plates. Give the mechanism a bit more play than usual until the plates seat. Not slop, but subtle play. Ensure the engine oil is level.
