Good morning Mark. I was wondering if you could possible point me in the right direction in getting my bike repaired. I was given a 2000 Ninja ZX9R (1 owner, driven sparringly, no repairs, the bike is almost brand new)about 2 weeks ago. The bike had 800 miles on it before I took it. Now it currently has about 1100 miles on it. Anyway, I took the bike out of the garage yesterday and parked it in drive way by son, I left the bike idling, when I returned, the bike was dead, as in no electrical juice, no power, nada. The bike is all stock, no aftermarket anything on it. I have tried both a new battery and the original battery (fully charged) and still I can't start the bike. This is what I do get: I get the PARK LIGHTS to come on, the horn, turn signals, emergency flashers all work. The display (tach/odometer, clock, oil display) the background is dimly lit. The bike will not "turn over." All of the fuses have been checked and replace just in case. I can't get the motor to start after drepssing the starter switch.  The kill switch is not at fault, it is in the ON position, on meaning start (to me). Normally with this bike, when you turn the key to the  "on" position, both the speedo and tach "gauge needles" would jump to the right and then back to the left. The Clock/Time would be displayed, the oil temp, it too would be displayed. Also the headlights and the rear lights would come on. I am not getting this anymore. Just a dimmed background light for the display units. I am not sure what to do next. Sorry for the long winded note, any help with this matter would be most appreciated, thanks and have a great day.

Hello Tye,

The long description is appreciated. I wish more were as such.

I suspect a loose connector or defective control module. To check wiring connections, start at each affected part and trace wiring back through all connections. Look for damaged wiring, loose grounds and multi-connectors, corrosion in connectors, water or condensation in connectors, or other defects/conditions. Apply dielectric grease to all connectors to displace water. Avoid high pressure washings as they cause water to enter connectors and possibly short circuits. Dielectric grease helps prevent this from happening.

Start with the above and keep me advised.

Respectfully,

===========================================================================Thanks for your prompt response Mark, I do appreciate it.  Thsi is what I found after looking at ever wire and connection that I could find. I looked at the fuses, wire connection, plugs that are near the fuse box, motor/starter, near the carbs, under or near the spring coil.  I disconnected and reconnected everything I could find (w/o the battery installed). After each disconnect/reconnect, I hooked up the battery and tried to fire up the bike, no luck. I still have the same problem, I can't get the motor to start/turn over. BUT I DID NOTICE SOMETHING NEW. I have a clicking sound coming from the display unit (speedo/tach/display unit). When the bike makes this clicking (relay contacts sound) BOTH my TACH and SPEEDO needles move to the RIGHT and then back to home position (left). This would normally happen if the bike was turned on.  I still have no clock nor Oil temp beimg displayed.  Again, I can't get the bike's motor to say anything. NO head lights, no "netural light" displayed, just a dimmly lighted background for the tach and speedo/clock/oil temp displays.
Does this make any sense to you?  Again thanks for your assistance with this matter.

Tye

Answer
Tye,

Get out the 12v tester and start probing circuits. Trace power through the ignition switch, and all hand controls/switches. There's got to be corroded switch, a damaged wire, loose connection, or ????

Disassemble the ig sw and inspect (if possible).

Keep me posted. Use my email: mshively1@woh.rr.com
