Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki GS850 question, suzuki gs850, fuel line

Question
Hey Chris,

Thanks for your services. In short, my neighbor gave me stated bike, which sat outside for several years. I've got it running, but when I put it in gear and try to go forward, the engine bogs out. This can also occur when in neutral and turning and holding the throttle. Plugs are new, tires rotate freely. If pertinent, the idle seems to go up and down, especially as I decrease choke. Thanks again.

Answer
Hi Glenn.
You have a "varnish" problem.  This occurs when fuel is left in the fuel system and evaporates, leaving behind a residue that we call varnish.  It gumms up the moving parts of the carbs as well as infecting any new fuel that is put into the bike.

The solution is to reseal the tank, replace the fuel line and have the carbs properly cleaned and inspected for a pssible rebuild as well.

Good luck.
