Motorcycle Repair: carb problem, cycle salvage, salvage yard

Question
Falcon,
I have a 1980 suzuki GS1000L that 1 of the fuel mixture screws on top of the carb, the head is stripped. How hard will it be to put a groove back into it so I can set the right mixture? I can adjust other three but this one is BIG problem. Thank's for your time!

Answer
Hi Kent.
I don't know if you can fix it.  If you can re-tap the hole, then do so, but be very careful to not let any of the shavings get caught in it.
The problem with that is that you may be forced to oversize the hole, which will mean that you will not be able to make it work since you will not find the correct size needle to fit both the diameter of the hole and the taper of the original needle.

Alternatively, you could get a used carb from a cycle salvage yard and just replace it.  This may be your best bet at fixing the problem correctly.  It will, most likely, also be correctly set which will save you a huge amount of time and effort.

Good luck.
