Motorcycle Repair: Dead Kawasaki..., kawasaki kz440, crankshaft bearings

Question
I have a 1982 Kawasaki KZ440 LTD that is on it's last legs but still gets me around the city.  Anyways...I'm driving the other day and I start to lose power...then my bike makes a real high pitched squeelling noise...then dies.  I'm able to get her started again and ride the last few blocks to my house.  The next day I start up the bike...again the high pitched noise.  I let the bike warm up a bit...all seemed well so I hop on make it about a block down the road noticing a distinct lack of power when accelerating.  Then the bike died.  After that the engine wouldn't turn over and I could only hear a click noise when I pressed the electric start.  What's wrong?  Battery?  Clogged Carbs?  worse?  Thanks for you help!

Answer
Hi Chad.
Check your oil.  Not the level, but drain the oil out through a clean rag.  My geuss and biggest fear is that the bearings are shot.

If I am right, then you will find a lot of metal shavings get caught in the strainer.  This means that the crankshaft bearings have gone and the engine has siezed because of it, which means only one of two things (if you intend on keeping the bike).  Either you rebuild the engine or you replace the engine.

The give-away was the squeeling noise.  It started after the parts were warmed up and had expanded.  That will not happen because of the battery or carbs.

I wish I had better news for you.
Good luck.
