Motorcycle Repair: transmission, yamaha 1100, maxum

Question
Chris, I just purchased a yamaha 1100 1981 (special/maxum). The 2nd (second) gear will not work. It will engage, then slip out or lock up the shifter. I can get it free by popping the clutch, then shifting into third. On the downshift it will engage for a moment, then do the same thing. It seems when I give it power, it wants to slip out, make noise, etc...How do I fix it? All of the other gears are fine. Thanks Jim

Answer
Hi Jim.
Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this problem.  You have a problem in the gearing.  That requires the engine to be removed and the case needs to be opened up for the transmission to be rebuilt.

If you are not completely confident doing this kind of work, then take it to a shop to do, but it will not be cheap work.

Sorry I don't have better news for you on that.
Good luck.
