Motorcycle Repair: FZR not starting?, yamaha fzr 600, seasonal storage

Question
Chris, I have a 1989 Yamaha FZR 600 and recently have been having problems with it.  It began with a hesitation to start and I had to hold the throttle on or else it would stall.  It also was underpowered when driving (poor throttle response).  The problem seemed to go away once the bike had warmed up.  This issue was off and on with the bike performing perfectly for stretches and then one day acting up?  Rececntly it would not start at all.  I kept trying but it wouldn't turn over.  The starter is fine and the batteries charged.  It was backfiring when I was trying to start it?  I am at a loss, any input would be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Conor.
The first thing to look at is the fuses and connections.  Start with the ignition fuse and main fuse.  Swap them for known good fuses and see what happens.  Check the connections for corrosion or looseness.  Check the wiring for shorts and arcing against the frame or engine as well.

Does the bike spend time in winter or seasonal storage?  You could have problems with the carbs and fuel system needing cleaning, if this is the case.

Have you done the tests on the ignition coils as per the repair manual instructions?  you could have one or both failing.  If you have near to or over 50,000 miles on the bike, then that is a very real possibility as well.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
