Motorcycle Repair: carberator, harley slip on mufflers, cv carb

Question
Hi Mike.
I have a stock 1987 883 XLH Sportster , except for a pair of (high performance? harley) slip on mufflers. I would like to know if I could scrap the butterfly carb and swap it for a CV carb off a newer sportster maybe 1990-2000. My problem is I live in Colorado. The altitude is above 5000 feet and I have a hard time starting it, it floods way to easy and it runs way to rich. And flat out wont srart in the cold,at 45 degrees or less. And there are very few air intake options for a stock 1987 Sportster. Its my first Harley and i've had it for about one year and I dont know what the old owner has messed with. Thanks Mike...G.Gib
P.S I know I could mess with the jets and stuff but there is still the air intake problem.

Answer
I would suggest changing to a S&S carb. Then you can jet the carb to your altitude. You should be able to install it yourself and do the jetting. The problem with the CV carb is that you will have trouble attaching it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
