Motorcycle Repair: Shifting problems, piston size, piston rings

Question
What do you think is the cause for the transmission not to shiftat all in a 83 kaw. klt 200. The machine makes no noises but it is stuck in 5th gear. The clutch seems to operate normally. Thanks for your time, Jay

Answer
Jay,
Unless your shift lever is slipping/rotating on the shaft, I'd say you have a broken shifter fork and/or dog.  Unfourtunatly this requires you to split the whole case to repair.  If you are willing to go that far, I would take that opportunity to rebuild the top end (piston, rings and rebore cylinder to new piston size) and possibly the lower (conrod and crankshaft).  At this point you'll essentially have a new power plant ready to go for years to come.  Quite a project but rewarding, if you have the time.

Good luck,
Mike
