Motorcycle Repair: Moving/Shifting, honda shadow, shift fork

Question
I have a 2003 Honda Shadow A.C.E., 750 cc.  I'm having a problem with getting the bike to move.  Starts up with no problem, but when I shift into first and release the clutch, the bike sits idling.  No matter what gear it's in it won't move.  Almost like the gear won't engage.  Chain is adjusted to where it needs to be and everything else is fine.  Do you think I burned up the clutch or tranny?  Please respond with a few hints.

Answer
Hi Jeff.
Since the bike isn't dieing, it isnt the sidestand cutoff relay.  So....that leaves just mechanical issues.  You could have a burned out clutch, bad clutch springs, a broken shifter fork or even a bent or broken shift shaft.

Does the bike give you that satisfying click/clunk that indicates that it is in gear?  If not, then the shift fork is suspect.  If the shift shaft is bent or broken, then it will be difficult or even impossible to shift at all.

If the clutchplates and/or springs are shot, then you will feel it go into gear and then not go anywhere.

Try checking those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
