Motorcycle Repair: changing piston rings, piston rings, valve seals

Chris,
My son has a 2002 XR-70, it is blowing white smoke and doesn't have the power or zip that it did. I am assuming this is a compression related problem.? I plan on changing the piston rings and gaskets but is there anything else that might be causing this problem?

Hi Mike.
 You may also want to check the valves and valve seals.  They are not likely to be bad, but they can go bad.  Also the valve timing can have an effect on the whole problem that you have been having, but it would be minor by comparison.  Outside of that, it sounds like you have the problem well under control.
