Motorcycle Repair: losing spark on one cylinder, bells and whistles, dc volts

Question
Chris,
  My 71 Honda cb350k3 seems to be losing spark on the right cylinder from time to time. It will run fine, then all of a sudden, the right side will stop firing and it loses a lot of power (naturally). I'm not much of a mechanic, and others have looked at it, but no one seems to know what it might be. Do you have a good sequence of items I should check to narrow this down? The carbs have been rebuilt and it's been tuned up and the timing set. Thanks...Steven

Answer
Hi Steven.
 With everything else correct, that only leaves 2 possible things that it could be;

1)  Intermittent short/bad connection in that circuit, or

2)  Failing ignition coil or related component.

 The repair manual will have the schematic for the wiring and it should also have the testing specs to determine if the coil is going bad or not.

You will need a multimeter to check all of that, so if you don't have one, go out and get one.  It need not have all the bells and whistles, just be able to check ac/dc volts and resistance (ohms).  The cheap little Radio Shack $10.00 multimeter that I got about 15 years ago has worked well for me and is recommended if you are on a budget.

Good luck.
