Motorcycle Repair: Non-running Suzuki, suzuki gs850, air fuel mixture

Question
Mark, I have a couple of questions. First of all, I have an '83 Suzuki GS850 that I can't seem to get to run. The carbs (Mikuni 1100 series)have all been rebuilt and yet when I put the whole mess back together I can't the bike to start without covering the air inlet on one of the carbs. I have to do this even with the choke fully engaged. Once I do get the darn thing to start, it won't run very long, and not at all when I pull off the choke. Any idea?
Secondly, since this bike sat at my Dad's house for about 8 years without being run, could it be possible for the rectifier and/or the alternator to go bad in that time? I have noticed that when the bike is running, the headlights don't brighten up and I'm getting less than the 14-15.5 volts across the battery terminals that is required. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Newton,

Send me your email address as requested. I'll return carb cleaning info files. Loaded with information. You'll have to compare your cleaning job with the info and see if you can diagnose the problem. Sounds as if the fuel is not flowing as it should. The air-fuel mixture is way too lean. Could be several things.

When the GS altenators of those model years go bad, they take the rectifier with them. I'm working on a '82 GS850 now with carb/alt repairs. Also, visit: "www.thegsresources.com" and "www.bikebandit.com" for additional assistance. Bike Bandit has online parts microfiche.

Visit: "www.electrexusa.com" for quality altenator replacements.
