Motorcycle Repair: 82 v45 valves, valve job, ballpark figure

Question
hi chris-

just picked up a 83 v45 and it sounds like its in
bad need of a valve job. heres my question...i usually do my own work but, internal motor work i should leave to the pros so, before i ride into my local shop how will i know they are being straight? i mean , if they try to charge me 500 bucks, am i being hosed? can i remove the heads and carry them into a shop or am i better off leaving them the bike? thanks sooooooooo much!

Answer
Hi Chip.
Well, if the shop is honest, then they will be able to give you any parts that they need to replace.  They would also be able to give you some kind of ballpark figure to do the work (somewhere between X$ and X$).  Many shops have a fixed rate for certain jobs.  The ones like that tend to be pretty fair.

Ideally, you should shop around.  Talk to other riders in your area as well.  Ask them about this shop or that shop and what mechanics and shops they recommend.  Then use your judgement.

Good luck.
