Motorcycle Repair: My CM400T electrical, spedometer, bayonet

Question
I just purchased a 1981 CM400T the other week and noticed that the lights behind the spedometer do not work.  I thought it was a bulb problem and replaced those with no success.  I then checked the fuse and the problem still remains.  The Tach lights work just fine, but I can never tell how fast I'm going at night withought slowing down by streetlamps.  I'm really hoping you can help me out.  Thank you.

Answer
Mike,
You'll have to work backwards.  You'll need a multimeter.  Test the bulb's bayonet holder's contacts to see if you have 12 volts VDC.  If you don't have voltage you will need to follow the positive feed wire back until you find voltage.  It is very possible you have a short (broken or frayed/damaged wire) somewhere along the way.  Once you find voltage, look "down steam" a bit to find the weak link.
