Motorcycle Repair: Carbs, fuel air mixture, cable failure

Question
1971 Honda CB350K4 Left carb doesn't work when opening throttle.  I removed the air cleaner and watched the vacuum slide and it moves up and down about 1/4 of an inch when the throttle is opened.  The carbs have been cleaned new needles put in the slides, float hieght checked/adjusted, new points, valves clearences checked/adjusted, I bought the bike not running, and have gone through everything, it was running reasonable well with a slight miss around 6 to 7 thousand rpm.  I pulled the left carb off cause the float bowl was leaking, and haven't been able to get it to run since.  Thanks

Answer
David,

Sounds like you still have a float level problem on that no. 1 carb.. I'm assuming you mean that that carb. is spilling execess fuel out of the overflow tubes or right out the barrel.  Either the needle valve is stuck open, not seating correctly or the floats are still adjused too high or have sprung a leak and are filled w/ gas sitting at the bottom (I've seen this happen with older models and sottered copper floats).  As for the slide only moving 1/4", that would have to be an improper cable adjustment on that carb, or cable failure.  After you get the bike running again you will want to syncronize the carbs. with a multi reading vaccum gauge.  Start w/ all the fuel air mixture screws backed out 1 and 1/2 turns.

Hope this helps,
Mike
