Motorcycle Repair: 1984 Honda Interceptor 1000, honda interceptor, long periods

Question
Chris - I don't know much about bikes, I took this bike in on trade in December, I can get it running but it won't idle and backfires quite a bit.  I thought it might be old gas so I changed it but that didn't seem to make much difference except to make it run a bit better.

Hope you can help me out
Thanks
Gordie

Answer
Hi Gordie.
Changing the gas was a good start, but not enough.  Fuel, when left for long periods, creates a film on everything that it is in long term contact with.  We call that film "varnish" and it creates havoc with all of the components of the fuel system.  Those carbs need to be pulled, taken apart and cleaned.  Then they need to be synchronized as well as doing the valves and timing.

Get the repair manual for all of the specs and proceedures.  BTW, that bike has the same engine as the Magna and Saber series' of machines.  Just a little trivia for you.

Good luck.
