Question
Hey Falcon i hope you have answer, i am extremely lost, i cannot find problem with my 1991 kawaski ex 500, first off i got the bike in "ok" condition for cheap,I changed spark plugs, coolant system, charging system, tune up, oil change chain work, paint the whole nine yards then came carbs...i cleaned them vigurously, used carb cleaner and soaked jets in special soluion, put everything back togethor, ran good, took it for a ride abouut 15 miles then when i stopped it stalled and started leaking gas out of the intake, i have no idea, i have been working on it whcih seems ike forever, took the carbs apart again! they were totally clean i put the idle mixture screws to the setting the book had wanted and now it runs with a really high idle then when i give it just a tap of gas it dies!spark plugs are gettin black too, it wont even start in choke. feul lines are good, floats are good jets are good, what can it be?...seems like it is running rich, what do i do?i know you have more experience with hondas and suzukis, but im pretty sure most carburated systems are the same. this is my first bike, and im really gettin jealous of seeing everyone on the road with a bike...please help me..Thank you

Answer
Hi Greg.
You are right that most carbs are basically the same.  As a matter of fact, you can often find that a Honda will sometimes be running the same carbs as a Suzuki or Kawasaki of the same year.  Not all the time, but once in a great while.

As far as your problem is concerned, you are running rich.  I think that it may be because of bad floats or float seals in the float bowls, which are letting fuel sneak past them when they should be stopping fuel flow completely.  You may need to do a rebuild on the rubber in the carbs as well as tightening the connections of the manifolds to the engine and to the carbs.

You may also want to double-check that mixture setting as well.

Start with those and let me know what you find.
Good luck.
