Motorcycle Repair: 1980 yamaha 400 special, yamaha 400, particals

Question
This bike has 8000 miles on it and sat for 3 years (due to lack of interest not mechanical problems) before I purchased it (about 3 years ago).  I've replaced the basics, plugs, air cleaners, tires and carb. flanges.  I've also had to replace the ignition module.  The bike will idle for hours but bogs down and backfires when you try to ride.  Last week I cleaned all the carb. jets (including the tiny pilot jets) and the bike ran well for the rest of the evening.  The next day it would not start.  A squirt of starting fluid helps start it up, but . . .

Answer
Jason,
Sounds like your carburators need to be adjusted properly.  Be very sure you did not damage the jets by clearing them w/ wire or a pick.  They should ONLY be cleaned with solvents and compressed air.  If your jets are undamaged you may be suffering from a float hieght problem or a sticking or worn needle valve.  If you don't aleady have a manual for your bike, pick one up. There you will find all the instructions for setting up the carb. as well as the critical specs. you need.  Also it is a good idea to install an inline fuel filter between your tank and carb to stop any rust or other tiny particals that could enter your carb. and cause further problems.

If you run into problems drop me another line,
