Motorcycle Repair: 81 cb750 - backfiring, air fuel mixture, fuel air mixture

Question
My cb750 either back-fires when i use a lot of throttle or dies altogether.  While riding, it will also intermittently lose acceleration while using the throttle.  Any ideas?  Is the fuel:air mixture too rich?  How do I fix this?

Answer
Hi Jienya,

Backfiring could be ignition or carburetor related. A lean air-fuel mixture or worn air cut-off diaphragms may cause backfiring. Generally, backfiring on acceration=lean, backfiring on deacceleration=air cut-offs.

Too rich mix causes engine to bog.

Read spark plugs and tune carbs accordingly. Carb tuning is part science, part skill/experience, and part luck.
