Motorcycle Repair: Engine Removal, suzuki bandit 600s, combustion chambers

Question
Hi,

I currently own a 2001 Suzuki Bandit 600S, with 4000km on it.  It was behaving oddly, so i took it in to my local dealer and had them inspect it.  I was told that one of the cylinders is experiencing low compression, and that to determine the cause they'll have to remove the engine from the bike and remove the top engine casing.  They said that this alone will cost 10hours x $75/hour = $750, plus any repairs that must be done to fix the problem.  I have no idea how daunting a task it would be but I am considering removing the engine myself using the suzuki shop manual, and then bringing it to the dealer to be diagnosed to save some of the labor costs.  I've never attempted to remove my engine before, and I was wondering if a buddy and I could do this on our own, or if i should leave it to a dealer/mechanic.  Any sdvice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi John,

Before removing the engine perform a cylinder compression test and a leak-down test to determine the condition of the combustion chambers sealing properties (condition of engine).

A leak-down test will indicate by percentage of leakage of air, the cylinder's condition. You can listen for escaping air through oil filler opening, exhaust, carbs, etc... to determine what part is bad.

You could remove the engine at home with a service manual. The task may become frustrating if you haven't done this before. I don't recommend disassembling anything without experience.

Shops where you live get $75 per hour? They're between $40 to $48 in the Dayton, Ohio area.
