Motorcycle Repair: GSXR 750 Valves, valve clearances, combustion chamber

Question
I have a 1996 GSX-R750,  it has 43000Kms(not miles) on it.  Basically my question is how do you know if your valves in the engine are worn out?  Right now my bike has a constant knocking, not loud,(kinda like a ticking, i think it is either the engine or the speedo).  Also the bike stalls when the temp. is high. It is also kinda rough in the lower rpms.  Can you help me.  Thanks Jon,  Need help its almost summer.

Answer
Hi Jon,

Jon: Basically my question is how do you know if your valves in the engine are worn out?

Mark: Perform a cylinder compression and leak-down tests to determine sealing properties of the combustion chamber. If valves are worn, the engine may smoke and may have a loss of compression. Valve clearances will tighten if valves are cupping/dishing (sinking into the valve seats).

Jon: Right now my bike has a constant knocking, not loud,(kinda like a ticking, i think it is either the engine or the speedo).

Mark: This could be excessive valve clearances or other. Excessive valve clearances cause noise, not enough or zero clearances cause engine damage.

Jon: Also the bike stalls when the temp. is high. It is also kinda rough in the lower rpms.

Mark: This may be the result of one of the above, or could be a carburetor tuning/cleaning/synchronizing issue.

Respectfully,
Mark Shively
