Motorcycle Repair: 1981 Virago, yamaha virago 920, exact alignment

Question
I recently removed the starter motor from my 1981 Yamaha Virago 920. When I took the motor off the end housing piece popped out. I,ve been trying to get the new motor in, but it seems like the gear may not be meshing. It won't go completly in. I'm guessing that if it popped out it shoud go back in without taking it appart any more. Is there a trick to lineing this up?

Answer
Hi Kirt.
The thing about the starter motor for the Virago is that it is a bit trickiy to replace sometimes.  If anything slipped when the end piece popped off, then you may have to remove the side cover that is over that part of the engine in order to get everything lined up properly.  This will require you to drain the oil as that cover also holds the oil in the bike.
You may want to refer to the repair manual to see the exact alignment of the component parts to make sure that everything is right for reassembly.

Good luck.
