Motorcycle Repair: gas in the oil, suzuki vx800, float bowls

Question
  Chris,

I own a Suzuki VX800. It has been parked all winter and last week when I drained the oil there was a lot of gas mixed in with the oil.  The gas tank, which I had topped off when I parked the bike for the winter back in November, is about 1/3 full now.  What has happened and how can I fix it?

Answer
Hi Giacomo.
It sounds like you have a leaking seal on the float bowls and the fuel valve.  Check those out.

Replace the oil.  It's no good now.

next time you store the bike, do not leave fuel in the tank or float bowls.  Besides the potential for a repeat of this problem, it turns to varnish in your carbs and causes problems with the bike running.

Good luck.
