Falcon, I have a 1985 Honda Shadow VT500c it was running fine. One day out on the road it started making a knocking sound. Then oil started to leak out. I took off the seat and and look around to find a leak but i didnt see one. i Took off the air cleaner and there was oil in the air box. I dont know how it is getting in there. The bike will start up but the engine will not go past 5000 rpm, when it previously has been going to 9000 rpms. it also will die if you give it full throttle. Do you know what is causing this? Where was the knocking coming from and where was the leak coming from?
Have you checked the valve gap and timing lately?
What condition are the spark plugs in? Clean, fouled, oily?
How dirty was the air filter?
You let me know everything about the problem and what you find and we can start to figure out what went wrong and correct it.
FALCON, the spark plugs were dirty and oily, the air filter was full of oil as well as the air box. I didnt notice a leak anywhere. and i havent checked the valve gap or timing. i started the bike up to day and it ran for a minute but died and wont start again. First thing you do is clean out the air box as much as possible and replace the air filer with a fresh one. Next, pull the plugs and clean them off. I guarantee they are oily again. Check your oil level. Are you overfilled? If so, then you have to drain a bit out. If not, then leave that alone.
With the engine totally cold, check your valves and timing as well as the cam chain tension. The specs and proceedures for that will be in your repair manual if you are unsure of any of it.
In addition, double-check the movement of the Carbeurator components that they move freely as the should.
Start the bike and see if that helps.
Also, where was the knocking sound coming from? What part of the engine?
