Motorcycle Repair: suzuki gearing, suzuki gs 500, rear sprocket

Question
i would like to make my suzuki gs 500 a little quicker.I was thinking i would just change the rear sprocket with one with less teeth. do you have any advice when picking the size and number of teeth. i dont want to have to feather the gas to keep from burning out , but i do want to make use of 5th and 6th gear.

Answer
Hi Wes.
Putting a slightly smaller rear sprocket on the back will not hurt things.  As a matter of fact, in the 60's and 70's, the Harley guys would keep 2 sets of sprockets around.  One smaller, for more power while riding around town, and another slightly lager, for when they would do long trips, for better range and speed.

Make sure that the sprocket set is compatible with your bike and have fun with it.

Good luck.
