Motorcycle Repair: Wont start!, honda cbr, long periods

Question
Hi Chris.  I have a 1996 honda cbr f3.  My problem is I can't get it to start.  With the key on the lights and everything are bright, not dimming.  With full choke it'll run for about 2 seconds then cut off.  With no choke it won't start at all.  What should I do?

Answer
Hi Fred.
Does the bike sit in storage over the winter or does it sit unused for long periods?

Based only on what you are telling me and the time of year, I would bet that you have varnish in your carbs.  We only call it varnish because that is what it looks like.  It gums up the fuel system and prevents the bike from running right.

Start by doing a proper cleaning of the carbs, drain any old fuel from the tank and reseal the tank or clean it out completely.

Let me know what happens.
Good luck.
