Hey Paintdoctor.
This definitely sounds like a short somewhere in that circuit.  Reconnect everything as it should be and see if you are getting contact between the affected wires and any common ground.  If you are getting it from the brushes and ground, then you have a shorted wire.
Do you have your repair manual?  If you do, then use the wiring diagram and the testing instructions to track down the short.
In a case like this, I could chase the wire down and fix the short, however, I am not there, so I would suggest taking it to a shop that has someone that really knows electrical to chase it down and fix it.  Worst case scenario, you need a new stator coil.  Best case, it's just a short and no serious damage has been done.

Good luck.

Answer
Hi Paintdoctor.
The fact that you are blowing the fuse as soon as you turn the switch on means that there is a short somewhere in the main power line.  Start by tracing the connections and components that you have reconnected.  Then trace the wiring from battery to switch and from switch to starter.  Then trace the other wires from the switch to each of their respective main components.  Check the lines that go through that fuse box as well.

Somewhere in there is your short.  99% probability that it is one of the wires from power to the stator, or even the stator itself or it's wiring.

Let me know how it goes.
Good luck.
