Motorcycle Repair: cam chain adjustment, yamaha xt350, camshaft timing

Question
I bought a 2000 Yamaha XT350 with 11000 miles on it. The engine makes a clattering sound that dissipates but does not go away completely around 3000-3500 RPM. I've read on the net that the sound from the XT350 could be from the cam chain flopping around.  Is this true?  And, if so, can I do something with the chain tensioner to help it? Anything else it could be?  Thanks for any insights.

Answer
Hi John,

Camshaft timing chains often are the source of such sounds. Other possibilities are loose valve clearances, but this is usually a ticking or tapping sound that increases and decreases with engine RPM.

You'll have to check the service manual about cam chain tensioner adjustemts. Most are automatic and non adjustable. Cam chains, chain guides, and tensioners wear and may cause excessive and undesirable noise. You would have to remove the parts and inspect or measure for wear.

Check into adjustment of the tensioner. Local libraries and AutoZone car parts stores here in Dayton, Ohio have service manuals. Avoid Haynes brand service manuals-lacks information and is confusing.
