Motorcycle Repair: H-D FXD Transmission/Primary Chain, power strokes, transmission gears

Question
Mike, My new 04 FXDI (about 900 miles)transmission is noisy (when shifting).  I was thinking maybe I needed heavier trans oil to quieten it down.  I've now been told that it's not the transmission gears - but it is the slack in the primary chain that occurs between power strokes - that causes the shifting noises.  That's it's normal.  That I shouldn't try to tighten the primary chain to eliminate it.  What's your thought on this matter? And, lastly, what is your recommendation for the type of transmission oil I should use in this bike?  Thanks...Lee Anders

Answer
There are many brands of oil out there you can use in the trans. I dont know if one is better than the other. They all do pretty much the same thing. I use harley oil in the trans, just cause I know it works and does a good job.
As to the noise, when your primary chain is new it tends to strech with time. I would check it, to see if it needs tightened. When the bike is cold it should have about 1/2 inch play in it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
