Motorcycle Repair: Virago Midnight 920 will not start, virago owners, yamaha virago

Question
The present question is about an issue with my 1983 Yamaha Virago Midnight 920.  During the past month, I've been preparing it to ride it, and I've noticed that from the 1st time after Winter [March], after priming it would start but as soon as I throttled it, it would turn off, and when I tried to re-start it would backfire.  As of a week ago, I tried to start it again, but it would no longer start at all.  The battery "died", and after re-charging, I made several attempts without success.  It "kicks over" but it will not start.  I have no idea what the problem may be.  The bike has a typical/common problem with all Viragos' starter, which makes it sound like it has "rocks" in it ["As I've been told by other Virago owners"], and as a result of that I don't want to push it too much and worsen the situation.  Can you please provide me with an answer as to what the potential problem might be, so that I can know who's assistance to seek?  I would so much appreciate it.  Thank you for any such assistance you may be able to provide...

Answer
Hi Agustin,

Virago starters need a shim installed to cure that awful sound. See your nearest Yamaha shop for details.

The carburetors are probably varnished preventing the engine from starting or idling. This is the most common repair with motorcycles after storage.

Had you included your email address with your question as requested, I would have returned repair info files.
