Motorcycle Repair: Steering head and bearings - H-D FXD, harley davidson, new bike

Question
I have a new 04 FXD with nearly 1000 miles.  The H-D factory manual advises to (A/L)  Adjust and Lube the steering head bearings at 1000 miles.  Over the years I've owned many bikes...and never have I had to mess with the steering head bearings.  Is Harley Davidson serious about adjusting and lubing this area - at only the first 1000 miles?  Seems to me that 25 to 30 thousand miles might require that - but not on a new bike.  Will appreciate your thoughts on this issue.   Thanks...Lee Anders

Answer
This is my personnel opinion. You should adjust the steering head, but lube it is a little much. I am like you, I have owned bikes all my life and I never lubed the steering head. I think it is a over kill on Harleys part.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
