Motorcycle Repair: Starter, kawasaki vulcan 500, kawasaki model

Question
I cannot start my 1993 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. I have charged the battery and have tested it; this is not the problem. When I push the starter button, electric starter, I hear this clanking noise and the starter shakes a little bit. Is it possible this is just a fuse connecting to the starter or it may be the starter itself? The process does not get to the point where the bike could turn over. I have read the manual but don't feel like I have a specific strategy to attack this problem.

Answer
Hi Carmine,

Will the engine start if bump-started (push started)?

I suspect the starter motor or starter clutch may be worn or defective. See the microfiche parts here:  (cut & paste link)

I recommend having a shop verify the problem and maybe doing the repair.
