54K Model Harley - New Carb. , Plugs,Plug Wires,Points,Coil,Condenser,

Before the restore this bike would start almost everytime with 3 or 4 kicks. I can not get it to start now. I have tried everything with no luck.I live in Maryland and can not find anyone capable or even willing to work on it.
The bike is getting fuel and spark, any suggestions or resources would be appreciated. Thank you.

When you said restore, did you mean you rebuilt the motor?
Mike

Mike,  I lost power in my office while typing my last response, so sorry if you are getting this twice.

No, the motor was not touched. It was running great so we did not rebuild it. I replaced everything else, oil tank, carb, wheels, tires, paint, plugs, pionts, etc.
I have noticed while trying to start the bike , that the carb seems to be blowing the fuel out towards the air cleaner instead of a vacuum type action sucking it in to the engine. Is this maybe a timing problem ? And have you heard of anyone in the Maryland area qualified to work on this old bike ? I would appreciate any help you could give.

I dont know anybody in Maryland who works on old bikes.
When you get to the bike, pull the air cleaner off and put your hand over the carb tight. Have somebody kick the bike over and see if it sucks your hand to the carb. Let me know what happens.
Also, what type of carb did you put on? Did you adjust the valves?
Mike

Mike,

The carb is a Sudco , I did not adjust the carb. , but I did have a local shop check everything out once it was back together.

It does have some suction when I cover the air cleaner port. Not a lot of suction. Thanks for youre help.

Answer
First I would start by making sure the points are right on as well as the timing. These bikes can be a bear to start if they are not. Next, make sure the valves are adjusted properly. Try kicking the bike over with your hand over the carb again and let some gas be pumped into the intake. Then try to start it. Sounds like to me since you changed the carb and it fired before that the carb is the problem. The carb you installed I have never worked on so I cant comment on it.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
