Motorcycle Repair: Cracked Crackcase Cover, suzuki katana, michael eddy

Question
I have a 2002 suzuki katana 600cc. As you can tell by my bike I am fairly new to motorcycles. My bike ended up being knocked over and the crankcase cover on the left hand side was cracked and all the oil spilled out. Can I seal the crack or replace the case? Also how would I go about doing that and were is a good place to getparts at? I am sorry so many questions but like I said I am fairly new with bikes. Also are there any repair manuals you could recomend I get? Thanks for your help in advance.    Michael Eddy

Answer
Michael,
Try "Haynes" or "Clymer" for your particular year and model aftermarket manual, about $25, Both publishers online.
I can't be sure w/o seeing but typically a aluminum or magnesium side cover can be welded by MIG or TIG welders at a good metal or welding shop for pretty cheap, the repair may not look pretty though.  You can order a new cover through the dealership, along w/ a new gasket but you are probably looking at anywhere between $50 to $100 for the part.  Just a question of esthetics at this point.  Contact your local dealer or look online for a quoted price by a salesman.

Good luck,
Mike
