Motorcycle Repair: 1980 KZ750 Starting Problem., starter clutch, kz750

Question
I am having a starting problem with my bike. Last week I was riding it fine. It was a slow start. Now I can not get it to start at all. The starter just whines nonstop. Once in awhile it will fire once or twice, but nowhere near starting. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Alan,

Does the engine rotate with the starter and the engine just won't start, or is the starter just spinning?

If starter spins, need to check starter clutch and starter for wear, etc.

If engine is tuning with starter, need to read spark plugs. See what's going on in cylinders during combustion prosess. Clean plugs and try starting again.

Carbs may need cleaned or adjusted, or both.
