Motorcycle Repair: 2nd gear on Yamaha R6 sticking, transmission gears, bike worth

Question
I am going to buy a 1999 R6 from a friend. The only issue is the 2nd gear will not stay in place. What causes this and is this a major repair. How much?
To give u a better description, u have to keep 2nd gear maunually in place with your foot. It will slip in nuetral. Is this bike worth it?

Answer
Hi Calvin,

That MC has been ridden hard. I would avoid the expense.

The transmission gears have dogs and cogs. These are little tongues and grooves that mesh together to engage the gears. When the edges of the dogs or cogs wear (become rounded) they slip apart. The result is the trainy usually goes to neutral. Call a dealership and ask how much to replace 2nd gears, shift forks, and whatever else they find damaged inside. It is major work and requires complete engine disassembly.

It's a common problem with in experienced riders who ride aggressively.
