Motorcycle Repair: 1981 yamaha xv750, yamaha xv750, replacement brushes

Question
I'm 52yrs young.I perform all my own repairs /modifications.I am rebuilding the starter on this 1981 xv750. Not one to pay the inflated prices that Yamaha marks up on their parts, I opt to find ways around problems. I need to know about replacement brushes for the starter. Do you know of any automotive starter brushes that come close to fitting( with a bit of shaving )this bikes starter? Also, the shift lever bushing is leaking. Any ideas (apart from trying to find a new one,for this bike ) on a bushing that would fit this application from another source? Tanks,Bob

Answer
Hi Bob,

I can appreciate the DIY approach. I know what dealers pay for parts and know the mark-up. A few minutes ago, a Kroger pharmacist was explaining that she pays .52 cents for a 80mg. Oxycontin tab and it retails over the counter at $7.75 each tab. It's astonishing! That's business.

I refer you to visit www.motorcycle-usa.com/forum and ask the same questions on their message board. Post your question under "Ask Motoman" and read the replies. This is a great site for repair intel. My username is TZ750 <-- big Yamaha fan. :)

I refer you because I do not know of any auto brushes that will work with the starter.

The shift shaft seal can be pulled and replaced, but use a factory seal.
