Motorcycle Repair: Honda CB transmissions, shade tree mechanic, honda cb

Question
I am re-constructing a CB360 from 1975 and am wondering if I can replce the gearing in the tranny from a 6-speed to a 5-speed. I am an experienced "shade-tree" mechanic and have rebuilt motors and trans missions in the past, so though not a trained mechanic, I have an above-average mechanical experience and ability and am not afraid of the amount of research and work involved. Can you also possibly help me gain a positive ID of my "bike"? Engine is CB360E-2029294, and frame #CB360-2026280. Manf. date 8/74.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Patrick, the transmissions from the CB/CL and the CJ360s should all be interchangeable, if that is your question.
CB/CLs are 6 speed and the CJ360s have 5 speed gearboxes.
I wouldn't try to fit anything else in the cases, however.

Your CB360-2XXXXXX engine and chassis are indeed 1975 model year items.

Get a good shop manual either from Ebay or Honda or their supplier www.helminc.com and you should be ready to tackle the project if you have some good tools. Take your time and don't force things inside. They are pretty straightforward in design and assembly, if you understand motors and transmissions in general.
