Motorcycle Repair: Honda cbr600 ignition/idle problem, honda cbr600, spark generator

Question
Mark,

Thanks for taking time out of your day to ponder my question!

I have a '95 Honda CBR600.  I'm about to embark on some trouble shooting, but thought I'd get some opinions first...

The bike was originally brought to a repair shop because it would stall at high rpm.  The shop diagnosed it as a bad stator/regulator, which I replaced.  This didn't seem to help.  The bike now seems to exhibit slightly different behavior ( before, it would idle ok, but would die after a few minutes of riding, typically at higher rpm )

To describe the current behavior, the bike idles pretty rough, and dies as soon as additional throttle is applied.  Connecting/disconnecting the stator/regulator doesn't seem to affect the idle and this behavior of dying with additional throttle.  Jumpering from my SUV doesn't seem to help either ( trying to provide voltage stability ).

There appears to be a good fuel flow to the cylinders.  Gas level is ok, and valve on main.

I'm thinking an ignition problem here?  Maybe the ignition coils, spark generator or pulse generator?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Answer
Hi Darin,

I rarely see ignition parts fail, especially Honda's. I've seen three defective ignition coils in 25 years.

I suspect the carburetion is in need of adjustments. Maybe a professional cleaning, a little tuning, and finish with synchronization.

Check the air filter(s). Be certain it/they is/are clean. Check the air intake ducts are unobstructed from fairing, to air box. Bees and mice love to nest in these places.

Pull off a float bowl and inspect it for fouled gasoline (varnishing). Gas is very unstable and lasts only a week or two before it begins to change chemically.

Send me your email address as requested. I'll return information files you'll need to perform a professional carb cleaning, etc...
